How Much Is the Foreign Exchange Fee to Use These Cards in Malaysia?

Since these cards are denominated in USD or EUR, every time you spend in Malaysia, your payment needs to be converted into Malaysian Ringgit first. Your card will charge an FX fee when converting to MYR.

Here's how they compare when it comes to foreign exchange (FX) fees.

Card FX Fee
0% RM 0.00 (0% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: RM 40.40
0.5% RM 0.20 (0.5% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% MC Fx) You'll pay: RM 40.60
1% RM 0.40 (1% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: RM 40.80
1.2% RM 0.48 (1.2% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: RM 40.88
1.5% RM 0.60 (1.5% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: RM 41.00
1.75% RM 0.70 (1.75% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: RM 41.10
2% RM 0.80 (2% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% MC Fx) You'll pay: RM 41.20
2.5% RM 1.00 (2.5% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: RM 41.40
3% RM 1.20 (3% Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: RM 41.60
7.15% RM 2.86 (2% + $0.5 Card Fx) RM 0.40 (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: RM 43.26

* Visa and Mastercard charge around ~1% on top of the card's FX fee.

Example: ZEN charges 0.5% foreign exchange fee. On a 40.00 Ringgits purchase, you pay RM 40.00 + RM 0.20 foreign exchange fee + RM 0.40 Mastercard foreign exchange fee = RM 40.60.

When a payment terminal asks, choose the local currency, Ringgits. This lets your crypto card handle the exchange rate, so you can be sure of the exact percentage you will pay. If you choose USD, the local POS terminal bank does the conversion instead, often at a worse rate. In some countries, that markup can reach 8%.
