How Much Is the Foreign Exchange Fee to Use These Cards in Vietnam?

Since these cards are denominated in USD or EUR, every time you spend in Vietnam, your payment needs to be converted into Vietnamese Dong first. Your card will charge an FX fee when converting to VND.

Here's how they compare when it comes to foreign exchange (FX) fees.

Card FX Fee
0% 0,00 ₫ (0% Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: 267.650 ₫
1% 2.650 ₫ (1% Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: 270.300 ₫
1.2% 3.180 ₫ (1.2% Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: 270.830 ₫
1.7% 4.505 ₫ (1.7% Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% MC Fx) You'll pay: 272.155 ₫
1.75% 4.638 ₫ (1.75% Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: 272.288 ₫
2% 5.300 ₫ (2% Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% MC Fx) You'll pay: 272.950 ₫
2.5% 6.625 ₫ (2.5% Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: 274.275 ₫
3% 7.950 ₫ (3% Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: 275.600 ₫
6.95% 18.426 ₫ (2% + $0.5 Card Fx) 2.650 ₫ (1% Visa Fx) You'll pay: 286.076 ₫

* Visa and Mastercard charge around ~1% on top of the card's FX fee.

Example: Kolo charges 1% foreign exchange fee. On a 265,000 Dong purchase, you pay 265.000 ₫ + 2.650 ₫ foreign exchange fee + 2.650 ₫ Visa foreign exchange fee = 270.300 ₫.

When a payment terminal asks, choose the local currency, Dong. This lets your crypto card handle the exchange rate, so you can be sure of the exact percentage you will pay. If you choose USD, the local POS terminal bank does the conversion instead, often at a worse rate. In some countries, that markup can reach 8%.

How Much Cashback Do These Crypto Cards Pay?

Out of the 13 crypto cards available in Vietnam, 4 offer cashback.

The highest advertised cashback % is usually not what you get on the free tier. You may need to pay a monthly fee or stake a large amount of tokens to unlock it.

Below you will see the entry-level cashback rate instead: what you can earn on the Free tier.

Best free-tier rate 5% Kolo · market benchmark 1%
Typical free-tier rate 1.25% median of the 4 cards paying on their free tier
Cards paying cashback 4 / 13 31% of cards supporting Vietnam
Uncapped cashback 0 / 4 typical cap 30 EUR a month
Kolo Card Kolo 5% free tier 656.250 ₫ monthly cap reached capped at 2.625.267 ₫ a month same on every tier
KAST Card KAST 1.5% free tier 196.875 ₫ monthly cap reached capped at 787.580 ₫ a month up to 5% $850/month
COCA Card COCA 1% free tier 131.250 ₫ monthly cap reached capped at 8.963.504 ₫ a month up to 8%
Xapo Card Xapo 1% free tier 131.250 ₫ monthly cap reached capped at 78.758.009 ₫ a month same on every tier

Cashback is paid on the amount you spend, and most cards limit how much you can earn. Some publish a monthly cap, and the figure above stops there. Others advertise a rate that only applies to the first slice of your monthly spend, then drop to a much lower ongoing rate - that drop is applied above too. Either way, a headline rate on its own tells you very little.
